Straight outta beta

The extended Kin team

23 July 2019

Kin, the app, came out of beta today. The app aims to improve people’s relationships with money and each other.

The first iteration of the product does this in a very focused way and helps you very practically to plan, split and share expenses. As the app matures and responds to what our community wants, we’ll introduce more ways of helping us all get better with money.

Kin, the collective of people creating the app, will never come out of beta. As an organisation, we’re going to constantly evolve as we experiment with designing an organisation that can self-organise around shared beliefs and authentic values. We’re not a startup that will one day be a scaleup that will one day be a corporate. We’re a living organisation that will consciously shift and grow as it needs to.

Today will be marked by a small celebration as we drop ‘Beta’ from our website and app. It’s not a launch in the way some of us remember from the early days of the Internet Economy. No flashy PR strategy, billboards or TV ads. It’s just us putting the app into the world without a beta sticker and standing by our belief that it can make a difference to how we learn about and interact with money and each other.

In terms of how we’re feeling about our product… we like Reid Hoffman’s quote: “If you are not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you’ve launched too late.” We aren’t horrified, but we know how much better it can be, and will be in the coming months and years.

If you want to learn more about the app, please download it, try it out and let us know what you think. If you want to learn more about the organisation, keep watching this page; we’ll keep you updated as we learn and grow.

Kin regards,

Christo, Dennis, Claudia, Jonathan, Rolf, Bertus, Bentolina, Mel, Rob, Nic, Bryn, Simon, Dan, Steph, Geran, André, Sasha, Claire, Simeon, Sarah, Alex, Eugene and Pat
